Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) 2022 Nationals Results

Nationals was held at the Cardinal Shooting Center in Marengo, OH from July 9th through the 16th. We had 12 athletes attend and they shot a total of 43 disciplines. They were once again part of the largest action shooting match in the world, with over 2000 entries. Of the 43 disciplines we had 30 personal bests. The Rookies: Logan P. Kasey, and Micah (all 5th graders) earned the following places - PCC - 4th (missing a medal by less than 9 seconds) - Iron Rifle - 6th Place - Optic Rifle - 8th Place (they started their day with 120 seconds already on the scoreboard due to them only having 3 members on the squad). Our Seniors: Caleb, Mitchell, Maddie, and Aaron (all in high school) garnered a 2nd place finish in Iron Rifle being only 5.41 seconds out of first place. In PCC they earned a 5th place finish being only 9.21 out of first place. Of note Maddie and Mitchell both shoot the PCC on iron sights while the majority of the competition field shot it with an optic. Our Intermediate (middle schoolers) were unable to field a full squad so they helped fill out Open (mixed divisions) squads with the Seniors. Optic Rifle - Caleb, Chandler, Aaron, and Parker placed 3rd in the most competitive discipline. In PCC - Parker, Chandler, John, and Korey placed 6th with 1.28 seconds separating 3rd place from 6th place. We had one collegiate competitor, Dawson, who placed 4th in Rimfire Pistol, 5th in Iron Rifle, 6th in Optic Rifle, and 6th in PCC.

We also had the following earn individual awards:

Maddie - Senior/JV Ladies - 1911 - 1st Place, PCC - 1st Place, Rimfire Pistol - 2nd Place, Iron Rifle - 2nd Place

Caleb - Senior/JV Males - Rimfire Pistol - 2nd Place, Rimfire Pistol Optic - 2nd Place, Optic Rifle - 2nd Place, PCC - 2nd Place, Iron Rifle - 3rd Place

Chandler - Intermediate/Advanced Males - Optic Rifle - 1st Place

All of our athletes had OUTSTANDING performances at Nationals and throughout the year. Our team practices once a month as a group and the rest of the time the athletes do drills on their own. When compared to many of the other teams who practice 2-3 times a week, it just shows the commitment level our athletes have to the sport. Prior to Nationals we competed in the Florida Snowbird Regional, College Nationals, Tallageda Regional, Georgia State Match, South Carolina State Match, and the Alabama State Match. Many of our athletes also competed in Steel Challenge Matches, Glock Matches, and Metal Madness throughout the year to enhance their skills.

The new season for SASP will begin on 1 September 2022 and run through 31 August 2023. We do accept new athletes throughout the season. If you would like to check out the team and the program, you are more than welcome to stop by on one of our practice days to see the athletes in action. We will be doing registration for the next season starting in September. Athletes must be in school (elementary through college), must be able to safely handle firearms, as well as listen to and follow the instructions of the coaches and range officers (for matches).

Youth Program

PCSC has been a huge part in Parker’s success, from ammo to time on the IDPA range for many hours of practice. Parker has received many words of encouragement from several members that happen to come by when he is practicing and these words have been a huge impact on him. People don’t realize how encouragement like that helps a young shooter mentally face the challenges of competition in this sport. PCSC will always have a special place in his heart for many years to come for all the support shown to him by club and it’s members. As a parent and a member I can’t thank PCSC for what they have done over the past year for Parker enough and I know he can’t thank everyone enough as well. Special thanks goes to all the members of the board for making this all possible and putting youth shooting sports back out front at PCSC once again.

Most Sincere Thanks,

Parker Ellington

Jessi Griffin, a Pickens County native has been shooting for roughly eight years. She got her start with her local 4-H shotgun team in wobble trap. After two years she decided to try something different and landed her spot on the Etowah Valley Mambas SCTP (Scholastic Clay Target Program). There she shot multiple shotgun disciplines such as American skeet, American trap, and sporting clays. There she was able to bring home a state and a national title in American trap, with her squad. She started her International skeet journey in 2018 after her father, Steve Griffin, made a comment to her one day while practicing American skeet. “I saw a video of a guy holding his gun down at his waist and then shooting the target.” She tried what her dad had told her, she hit the target, and from there on she was hooked. Jessi then went on to win multiple national titles in International skeet across the country.

In 2021 she was fortunate enough to shoot well at the 2021 Jr. World Cup Team Selection Match in Kerrville, Texas. She shot scores well enough to bring her up to the second team spot, right behind 2020 Olympic athlete Austen Smith, who was still a junior at the time. She then went on to represent the United States in the Jr. World Cup in Lima, Peru. She ended up placing 19th in the world. She is still continuing her journey in International skeet, and is currently hunting down a spot on the 2023 USA Junior World Cup Team, to travel with them to Seoul, South Korea for the Junior World Cup. She has been very driven and has accomplished much at the ripe age of 20. She has been able to make friends with people from all around the country and even some from overseas. She says that she is so fortunate to be able to travel and experience these events in her life. “Being able to make such good friends from so far away is so special to me,” is what she says she loves about it. Although she has already done much more than kids her own age have, she is not done, and she is ready to make more accomplishments.
